Location: New South Wales, Australia
Product: iArchive and iFerret
Application: Legacy system decommissioning, data archiving
Overview
iArchive enabled Hornsby Shire Council to retain access to historical data while transitioning to a new cloud-based environment, avoiding the cost and complexity of migrating legacy systems.
The Challenge
After 15 years on a managed service, Hornsby Shire Council transitioned to a new technology environment, combining cloud-based and in-house systems.
A key decision emerged:
- Should all historical data be migrated into the new systems?
- Or should it be archived and accessed separately?
Migrating data would require a significant and costly conversion process, while also increasing storage demands in cloud environments.
At the same time, the Council needed to ensure ongoing access to historical information without relying on outdated systems.
The Solution
iPlatinum implemented iArchive, enabling the Council to extract and store historical data independently of its original applications.
The solution allowed the Council to:
- Decommission legacy systems
- Retain full access to historical data
- Query and report on archived information
- Avoid complex data migration into new systems
The archive environment was structured to support reporting and ensure data accuracy and accessibility.
The Outcome
- Avoided costly and complex system migration
- Reduced reliance on legacy platforms
- Maintained seamless access to historical data
- Simplified the overall system environment
- Reduced long-term storage and infrastructure overhead
The approach provided a practical and scalable way to manage legacy data as the Council modernised its systems.
Council has also installed iFerret to enable search across live transaction data in the cloud environment.
